This is the SCA
What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the customs, combat, and courtesies of the Middle Ages. Each member does this by creating a persona based on someone who may have lived in the middle ages. The society is incorporated under the laws of California with branches across the United States, Canada, Sweden, New Zealand, England, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, and Korea.

What are the activities of the SCA?
There are Tournaments where the martial arts of the Middle Ages are displayed, and Feasts and Revels where medieval food, drink and entertainment are sampled. Classes on subjects dealing with either the Current Middle Ages (the S.C.A.) or the pre-seventeenth century world are taught by members at events called Universities or Collegiums. Arts and Sciences Fairs emphasize the exhibition and/or competition of various artistic skills and researches of S.C.A. members. Guilds or similar groups hold meetings to instruct and assist interested persons in such subjects as dance, cooking, armor making, needlework, music, and more. Information on S.C.A. is also disseminated in newsletters, magazines, and pamphlets. In additfion to the historic aspect of research and re-creation, the S.C.A. also encourages the spread of chivalry, courtesy, honor, and graciousness, qualities which are sadly lacking in today's world.

What can I do?
Part of the fun in joining the S.C.A. is selecting a persona, or a personal character from a specific historic time and place. Each person chooses a chronological and geographic time frame, and proceeds to research customs, manners, ethics, dress, eating habits, and many other factors from his chosen time and place to "flesh out" the characteristics of his persona from the past. The only restriction is that a persona may not be an actual historic figure, nor one from mythology or literature. The research about this persona may be as complex or as simple as the individual chooses. The time from of most personas in the Society covers approximately one thousand years, from the fall of Rome (c. 600 AD) to 1600 AD, and geographically includes all parts of the world known to western Europe in that time frame. While the emphasis is primarily European, many individuals have chosen an Oriental, Arabic, or even a Central American persona.
Handouts
Twin Moons has released handouts to help the newcomer get acquainted with the SCA. There are two handouts that will soon be available in the downloads area:
SCA Newcomer classes Handout
The newcomer class has been taught many times by Dona Maestra Angela Sara Maria Diaz de Valdez and is a great resource that tells you all you need to know about the SCA.
WAR 101 Prep Handout
This document has everything you need to know to be prepared for camping at Estrella War. It's a must-read!
How can I take part?
Weekly Practice and Meetings:
The Barony of Twin Moons is a chapter of the SCA. Geographically, the Barony encompasses the mundane cities of Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek, all of which are part of the Metro Area of Phoenix, Arizona.
The barony holds weekly meetings with Fighter Practice promptly at 7:30 pm every Thursday night at Gene Autry Park. Court is held on the last Thursday of each month. Newcomers are always welcome.
Archery Practice
Practices are held every Sunday at 9:30 AM at the archery range at Papago Park. If practice is cancelled or otherwise interrupted, we will post a notice in the Announcements section above. The archery range is located at 62nd and Oak streets north of McDowell. Turn left on Oak (west) and then take the first right after the National Guard building. The archery range is the first up a dirt road. Bring sunscreen or a hat as there is not much shade. We do have lots of water! For those new to the sport, we have several loaner bows and will teach you the ropes.
Twin Moons Mailing List
TwinMoons-L is a mailing list for the populace of the SCA Barony of Twin Moons. It has been put in place to service the Barony, to send announcements of events, work parties, scriptoriums, classes and other such news that would be also heard at Baronial meetings. You may also make plans, ask for rides to events or even to banter.
