Welcome to the Lunar Scribes web page
Who are the Lunar Scribes?
The Lunar Scribes are a group of gentles from the Barony of Twin Moons that are devoted to the study, practice and teaching of the scribal arts, including manuscript illumination, drawing, calligraphy, and the history of scribing. Basically, we are the folks that create all the wonderful award scrolls you see given out at events!
What are the activities?
We hold scriptoriums once a month to meet and work on projects, learn new skills, and trade ideas. These workshops are open to all from complete novice to advanced artist. The Barony has paint, pens and paper for you to work with, so don’t worry if you don’t have your own art supplies.
Some of the classes and skills taught:
• Basic scroll design and layout
• Working with period pigments
• How to make period ink
• Calligraphy 101
• Gold leaf techniques
• How to: whitework and shading
• Illumination styles in history
• Basic figure drawing
• Color theory
• How to mix /work with gouache
What can I do?
If you are interested in learning calligraphy, or how to design and paint scrolls, or if you are a budding artist and want to get more involved in the Barony, then let the Baronial Scribe know! Come to a scriptorium – the Barony has lots of scribes willing to share their time and knowledge with you. There is also a yahoo group list set up for the Lunar scribes for the purpose of setting up meetings, discussing ideas and asking questions, letting others know of new books, websites, etc.
Lunar Scriptoriums
The Lunar Scribes meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 6pm to 9:00pm at HE Wenefred of Hay on Wye’s home. For a small donation to the kitty, we are able to provide dinner (pizza, lasagna, Boston Chicken, Chinese, etc.) at these meetings.
